Spring rains

Sunday, as the day before, the river in the valley below was brown with dirt that used to be on some hill someplace upstream. Odd, fierce winds from the west burst across the patio, setting the wind chimes clanging and dashing the hummingbird feeder against the kitchen window. Now muddy cat prints across the back porch and up the back steps attest to our cats’ increasing familiarity with their new back yard. The rains, I hope, will encourage, and not wash away, the newly planted peas, lettuce, chard, and spinach, so that later spring and summer will abound in flowers, vegetables, and herbs.
