Halloween at Philippi Covered Bridge?

Saturday and Sunday two weeks ago we drove east into the mountains to measure autumn’s progress by observing leaf colors.

On Saturday we stopped at the small park next to the covered bridge that spans the Tygart Valley River at Philippi, a favored stopping point when we drive in that area. The bridge is a rare two-lane covered bridge, still in use as part of U.S. Route 250 after more than 150 years.

This car was in the parking lot, perhaps as a reminder of the Battle of Philippi Races in 1861. Or perhaps they were simply preparing early for tonight.

Happy Halloween.
