In this case I think it’s a daisy fleabane (Erigeron annuus, or annual fleabane). Or maybe it’s a plains fleabane (Erigeron strigosus). The differences are subtle, and I didn’t look carefully enough when it was in bloom.
Fleabane — the bane of fleas — death, destruction, ruin of the flea? The name must be pure wishful thinking, because the fleas don’t seem the least bit impressed. Just ask the cats.
