A Game on York’s Wall

We found this chessboard, carved into the surface of York’s city wall, as we strolled from Micklegate Bar toward Clifford’s Tower.

I like to think that some Medieval soldiers, standing guard on the wall day after day, decided to relieve their boredom with a game of chess. Or, more likely I suppose, some more recent idler carved it.

The City of York has provided a handy guide for touring the city walls, “The Walls: From Medieval Defense to Victorian Promenade“.
